Site Promised First Page of Google a Myth

One of the biggest false SEO marketing promises is “We will get your site on the front page of Google”. If it were really that easy to be on the first page of Google, everyone would be there, but there is only room for 10 websites for every keyword or key phrase. Ranking in the top 10 of thousands is not that simple.

Google wants to put the most authoritive sites on the first page of any given search result, which is why you frequently see sites like Wikipedia or Cambridge Dictionary at the top of the list. They are reputable authorities with reliable information. If you want to be on the first page, your website needs to be a leading authority in your field, and, unfortunately it is not as simple as paying a few hundred pounds to someone who claims to be such an SEO expert that they can “guarantee” they’ll get you on the first page.

The SEO industry is full of smoke and mirror type marketing. Many of the more unscrupulous companies like to tell you that they have secret tricks that will make your site rank on the “first page of Google” and many people believe it. Everyone wants to think by just spending a little money they will achieve something great. Similar to buying a bottle of pills with the promise of 6 pack abs, but most of us know it is not that easy. The same theory applies to SEO and the first page of Google. Honesty and hard work travel much farther than a quick fix.

Google has a very advanced algorithm that ranks website content, viewer duration on pages, quality of links, and other factors that are very hard to fake. If someone tells you they can change a few words and sell you a link and you will be on the first page of Google, you will be very disappointed if you give them any money.

To rank on the first page of Google you need to build a leading site on your subject. This can be a lot of hard work and can take years if the subject area is competitive. If you have a website on “Incan yeast cultures” you can probably rank on the first page of Google next week because your site will be one of very few in that category. On the other hand, if you want to rank for something like “back pain”, this could take years of hard work because you have tens of thousands of sites try to rank for those same keywords and you’ll be competing with many large and established websites that have hundreds of well written pages on that subject.

Your average company is just trying to rank in a certain category that is usually not highly competitive, and it is realistic to rank well with a little bit of work and planning. However, it still does take a little bit of work and not just a magic trick involving a couple of links and changing some words in the meta tag.

SEO layouts, keywords, links and backlinks do come into play and are an important part of getting your site to rank well in the search engines. A good web design or SEO company can help you layout your website and content so that it will get read well by the search engines. A good company can also help you acquire reputable links and other elements search engines notice and calculate into their algorithms. Just like anything, be very leery of the “too good to be true” promises.
