How do I check my Website Backlinks?
Category: Linking Strategies
There are many ways you can you check the amount of backlinks your website has.
Here we list the most frequently used and most popular methods that many a webmaster use on a daily basis.
Google Search
Type “link:www.mydomain.com” into Google to discover the amount of links Google are acknowledging your website has. The amount of backlinks shown will vary significantly when compared to Yahoo! Site Explorer.
Yahoo Search
Visit http://siteexplorer.search.yahoo.com/ and enter your URL in the search area and click the Explore URL button. This will pull up an extensive list of websites and webpages linking to your website including your own website’s pages.
MSN search
The “link:www.mydomain.com” feature on MSN.com no longer works. This has been inactive since March/April 2007 and there is currently no way to tell how many backlinks your website has according to MSN.
Other methods frequently used to check a website’s backlinks are tools that are free to use on the web. Many of these backlink checker tools will (after entering your URL) attempt to search multiple search engines and return the amount of backlinks found in each of them in one list saving users time performing many searches on different search engines.
Whilst there are hundreds of these freely available, many of them often timeout being returning any results thus making webmasters revert directly back to Google and Yahoo for a website’s backlinks.

What a wonderful article. I have been wondering about backlinks and wondering how many sites would link to my website. I really appreciate the work you put into this article. How do backlinks directly benefit a website? Is there something that gets more traffic to my site, or are they just links of my website on other websites?

Nice article. My wife and I are starting our first website for an affiliate program and these are the type of tools we need. Google loves it when there are backlinks and will increase a sites page rank. Just need to be patient in building the links.

Those are great, thank you. I just went and checked out a couple of them, and it’s certainly intriguing to see what you can find there. This is definitely informative.

Yes, I use the technique to avoid google bombing after every round of article submission using article distribution software to make sure that I am not building too many backlinks too fast to my sites.I have used the method to check backlinks on yahoo as well, but never did it for msn.Bing is becoming quite popular.Microsoft is finally making some headway in the search market.

Checking some back link will help you to decide if you want to buy any site. Of all the methods that you have mentioned I think that Google gives the best solution.
Aside from checking back links on Google, I like the idea of using a tool for checking back link. One such back checker tool which I am using is Dnscoop.

Okay, just a little bit of confusion here. When you speak of a backlink, does that mean that a site other than my own has put my site on their own links page? Or put a link in one of their articles? If that is not it, please correct me.

One thing I do is link my URL in a title statement that I use as my signature on forums, then you just search that phrase in quotations through google and it should show the places you have it. Alta Vista also has a funtion that allows you to see what domains link to you. Just make sure there are no broken links that hurts your ranking
